Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Her Decision To Quit Drinking Alcohol

Anne Hathaway Quit Drinking For the Next '18 Years' Because She Hates

Life changed dramatically for Anne Hathaway the day she became a mom. Since welcoming her first child, son Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, with husband Adam Shulman in March 2016, things have been evolving daily for the actress. In a candid interview with Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on January 22, the star of Serenity revealed that her latest life change is giving up alcohol entirely.

“I’ve been drinking for 18 years, and now I’m done,” the 36-year-old actress declared. “I’m stopping while my son is living in my house.” If you do the math, Anne won’t be sipping wine or enjoying a cocktail until she’s 52, considering Jonathan is turning 3 this March. That’s a serious commitment to sobriety!

Why Anne Hathaway Decided to Quit Drinking

So, why did Anne Hathaway decide to quit drinking? Well, it turns out she had some compelling reasons. First, she admitted that she doesn’t exactly love the way she drinks. But more importantly, she explained to Ellen that her son is reaching an age where he really depends on her, especially in the mornings. That’s a big responsibility, and she wants to be fully present for him.

Her Night Out With Matthew McConaughey

Anne also shared a story about a night out with her Serenity co-star, Matthew McConaughey, and his wife, Camila Alves. During filming, they went out drinking between takes. The next morning, Anne woke up feeling less than stellar and wasn’t in great shape for a meeting. This experience solidified her decision to quit drinking.

It wasn’t the first time Anne had dealt with a hangover while juggling important responsibilities. She recalled a day when she dropped her son off at school while hungover. “That was enough for me,” she told Ellen. “I didn’t love that experience.” Ellen, who is 60, joked, “Another reason I don’t want kids. I’m not quittin’ drinking!”

Anne’s Late Birthday Surprise for Matthew McConaughey

When Matthew McConaughey appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier in the week, he shared a hilarious story about Anne showing up to his 49th birthday party a day late. “My birthday is on the fourth of November, so we had the party that night. I didn’t notice, but the Hathaways didn’t show up,” the 49-year-old actor recounted. “The next day, I woke up, still in my robe around 5:00 p.m., the time we had started the party the day before, and the doorbell rings. It’s Anne, with a bottle of wine, balloons, a gift, and I’m like, ‘Great! Come on in.’” Despite the mix-up, Matthew said the group hung out until 2:00 a.m. Now that’s what I call a fun night!
