Hold onto your popcorn, folks—reports of Modern Family’s demise have been a little premature. Despite earlier talk about the show possibly wrapping up, the series is back for another season. Leading the charge, Sofia Vergara, the ever-charismatic Gloria Pritchett, confirmed this week that she and the rest of the beloved cast are gearing up for Season 11. And now, it's official: ABC has announced the return of Modern Family for one last hurrah.
ABC's Official Announcement: The 11th and Final Season
On February 5, during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Karey Burke, president of ABC, made the big reveal. “We’re thrilled to announce that Modern Family is returning for its 11th and final season,” Burke said with pride. She went on to praise the creators, Chris Lloyd and Steve Levitan, calling their work “one of the most groundbreaking and iconic comedies in television history.” Burke teased fans with a promise of milestone moments in the final season that no fan should miss.

Chris Lloyd added in a statement, “For a decade, our characters have faced life’s pivotal moments and emerged stronger and richer for it. Now, we’re choosing a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family.” Steve Levitan chimed in with a humorous note, “Even after all these years, we’ve realized our writers still have some surprising things to learn about each other’s personal lives.”
Sofia Vergara Confirms the News
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Sofia Vergara shared her excitement. “I believe we’re adding an extra season, set to begin next August,” she said. “We’ll wrap up the 10th season in March, and from what I’ve heard, we definitely are doing an 11th season. Everyone is thrilled and overjoyed about this news!”

Cost Challenges and Behind-the-Scenes Negotiations
One of the challenges of maintaining a hit show like Modern Family, with its extensive cast, is the rising cost of production and actor salaries. Each year, the budget climbs, eventually reaching a point where it becomes too expensive for the network to keep the series on air. But clearly, the stars aligned, and agreements were made to bring the show back for one last season.

Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy, spoke to ET in December about the possibility of an additional season. “We were approached, and the cast enthusiastically agreed. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work to do with Fox and ABC’s acquisition of Fox. It’s like navigating through an extra building full of paperwork, but I really hope it happens. And it has!”
